OPGW, also known as optical fiber composite overhead ground wire is a dual-functioning cable. It is designed to replace traditional static/shield/earth wires on overhead transmission lines with the added benefit of containing optical fibers which can be used for telecommunications purposes.OPGW must be capable of withstanding the mechanical stresses applied to overhead cables by environmental factors such as wind and ice. OPGW must also be capable of handling electrical faults on the transmission line by providing a path to ground without damaging the sensitive optical fibers inside the cable.

Quality and Testing

There are different test series to assure the quality of GL FIBER' OPGW Cable:

∗ Routine test (inprocess testing according to internal quality plan)
∗ Factory acceptance test (FAT, witnessed by customer)
∗ Type test (only in case of a basic new design, repetition in exceptional cases)

OPGW tests shall be in accordance with applicable standards or agreements between purchaser and manufacturer. As a general rule the tests will be performed according IEC 60794-4-10.However, if necessary tests can be done according to IEEE Std1138.

Central Type Stainless Steel Tube OPGW Cable	12/16/24/36/48/96	The stainless steel tube is hermetically sealed by seamless welding; the central stainless steel tube is surrounded by single or double layers of metal wires. The tube is filled with water-resistant gel. This tube provides complete protection to the fibers from longitudinal and lateral water/moisture ingress. The interstices in between the stainless steel tube and the metallic wires are filled with anti-corrosive grease for protection from corrosion.
Stranded Type Stainless Steel Tube OPGW Cable	12/16/24/36/48/96/144	The stainless steel tube is hermetically sealed by seamless welding and is surrounded by single or double layers of metal wires. The tube is filled with water-resistant gel. This tube provides complete protection to the fibers from longitudinal and lateral water/moisture ingress. AL-covered Stainless Steel Tube OPGW Cable	12/16/24/36/48/96	Optical fibers are placed in a hermetically sealed stainless steel tube covered with an aluminum layer. The central aluminum-clad stainless steel tube is surrounded by single-layer or double-layer metal wires. Good anti-corrosion performance, suitable for the highly corrosive environment, no need to use anti-corrosion grease.
Aluminum PBT Tube OPGW Cable	12/16/24/36/48/96	Optical fibers are placed loosely in plastic tubes embedded in a hermetically sealed aluminum tube. The aluminum tube is surrounded by single or double layers of metal wires. The structure has good corrosion resistance for its uniform materials.

OPGW Type Test
Type test may be waived by submitting makers certificate of the similar product performed in an internationally acknowledged independent test organization or laboratory. If type test should be performed, it will be carried out according to an extra type test procedure reached
to an agreement between purchaser and manufacturer.

OPGW Routine Test
The optical attenuation coefficient on all production cable lengths is measured according to IEC 60793-1-CIC (Back-scattering technique, OTDR). Standard single-mode fibers are measured at 1310nm and at 1550nm. Non-zero dispersion shifted singlemode (NZDS) fibers are
measured at 1550nm.

OPGW Factory Test
Factory acceptance test is carried out on two samples per order in the presence of the customer or his representative. The requirements for quality characteristics are determined by relevant standards and agreed quality plans.

With more than 60 OPGW fiber cable designs successfully type-tested, GL FIBER has extensive experience in OPGW qualification. Additionally, our in-house laboratories certify that all cables are manufactured in compliance with the design specifications.
